How to enter sweepstakes safely (and give yourself the best chance)

4 min read · Updated

Entering sweepstakes can be a relaxing hobby, and people do win. A little routine keeps it safe and makes it more fun.

Use a separate email address

Sponsors send newsletters and winner notices by email. A dedicated address keeps your main inbox clean and makes real winner emails easy to find. See our guide on setting up a freebies email.

Read the official rules first

It takes a minute. Check who can enter (age, state), how often you can enter (once, or daily), the end date, and how winners are contacted. Entering more than the rules allow can get you disqualified.

Enter where the odds are better

  • Daily-entry sweepstakes reward people who come back.
  • Local and smaller giveaways usually have fewer entries.
  • Skill contests (photos, recipes, short essays) often have far fewer entrants than one-click giveaways.

Keep a simple tracker

A note or spreadsheet with the sweepstakes name, end date and how often you can enter helps you stay consistent, and makes it easy to recognize a real winner notice.

Know what a real win looks like

A real win comes from a sweepstakes you entered, from the sponsor or its named administrator, and never asks you to pay. For bigger prizes you may be asked to sign an affidavit and, for tax reporting, provide details through an official form. Prizes over $600 are usually reported to the IRS, so keep a record.

Never pay

No purchase is ever necessary to enter or win a legal US sweepstakes. If you're asked to pay anything, read how to spot a fake sweepstakes.
