Cash back apps and browser add-ons give you back a slice of what you spend at partner stores. It sounds too good to be true, but the model is simple, and it costs you nothing extra.
Where the money comes from
Stores pay a referral fee to the cash back company when it sends them a customer who buys something. The cash back company shares part of that fee with you. The price you pay the store stays the same.
Why it takes weeks to arrive
Your cash back usually shows as "pending" first. The store waits until the return window has passed before it confirms the order and pays the referral fee. Only then does your cash back become available. A few weeks to a couple of months is normal.
How to make sure your purchase counts
- Start from the app or add-on before you add things to your cart, so the store knows where you came from.
- Finish in the same browser session. Switching devices half-way can break the link.
- Don't stack other coupon add-ons at checkout; some replace the cash back link with their own.
- Check the store's exclusions. Gift cards and some categories often don't earn cash back.
Is it safe?
Well-known cash back services are legitimate. They should never charge you to join. Read what data a browser add-on can see before you install it, and only install add-ons from your browser's official store.
