How to try a free trial without getting charged

Free trials can be a great way to test a service. Here is a simple routine to try one without paying a cent by mistake.

On this page

A free trial lets you use a paid service for a while before you decide. Most trials ask for a card up front and turn into a paid plan automatically when the trial ends. That's not a trick in itself, but it is how people end up paying for something they forgot about. This routine keeps you in control.

Before you start

  • Read the trial length and the price after it. Both should be shown on the sign-up page. If you can't find the price, don't start.
  • Find out how to cancel. Look for "cancel anytime" and check whether you cancel in the app, on the website or through your phone's app store.
  • Check the cancellation timing. Some trials end at a set hour on the last day, not at midnight.

The moment you sign up

  1. Put a reminder in your phone for two or three days before the trial ends.
  2. Save the confirmation email. It usually shows the end date and the price.
  3. If you signed up through an app store, note that cancelling the app subscription happens in your phone's settings, not by deleting the app.

When the reminder goes off

Ask one question: will I use this enough to pay the full price? If not, cancel there and then. Many services let you keep using the trial until its end date even after you cancel.

Signs to walk away

  • The price after the trial is hidden or only in tiny print.
  • The "trial" costs money up front for something called shipping or handling.
  • There is no clear way to cancel online.

On HonestPerks, every trial sits in its own Free trials tab and says "card usually needed" right next to the button, so you always know before you tap.
